Segment one — from failure to noticing. Yours. Usually the longest. A pipe fails at 2pm and somebody notices at 6pm. Or it fails on Friday and somebody notices on Sunday. A hose behind a washing machine can run for a full working day. A slab leak or a service line leak can run for weeks. This segment can be hours, days, or a billing period — and it's frequently longer than every other segment put together. How to shorten it: leak sensors under sinks, behind the washing machine, beneath the water heater, and under any run above a finished space. Whole-property monitors with automatic shutoff go further, closing the valve when they detect a continuous flow. In a property that stands empty for periods, that's the difference between a puddle and a renovation.
